RIP Harold Chapman

Harold Chapman, Deal, Kent

Harold Chapman sadly passed away on Friday 21st August. This obituary from Linden Hall Studio sums up our thoughts.

We are greatly saddened at Linden Hall Studio to hear of the passing of Harold Chapman.

Born in Deal in 1927, Harold has been a key figure within the gallery programme ever since his hugely popular exhibition NOT ONLY THE BEAT HOTEL, which we held in 2016. We were delighted to begin representing him after that, and his wonderful photographs have brought great joy to or audience ever since.

Ian McEwan summarised the genius of Harold Chapman within an article he wrote for his 80th Birthday ;

“If Chapman were merely a chronicler in a great documentary tradition, his achievement would be impressive enough. His lustrous landscapes of the Herault valley in the Languedoc, his priceless record of the Beat Hotel, his omnivorous, year-on-year transcription of daily life and its little undercurrents, would ensure his reputation as a photographer of the first rank. But it was constructive paranoia that made him an artist.”

An incredible career which spans over seventy years of looking through the lens, Harold Chapman will be greatly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing a truly wonderful photographer, artist and man.
